The UK and US have agreed to jointly oppose emerging cyber threats and crack down on undisclosed shared adversaries who carry out hostile cyber activities.

The announcement came amid rising concern over ransomware originating from Russia, the BBC reports.

At a recent intelligence meeting in the US, General Sir Patrick Sanders, Government Communications Headquarters [GCHQ] director Sir Jeremy Fleming and US Cyber Command head General Paul Nakasone “reaffirmed” their collective commitment to come together to disrupt new and emerging cyber threats and “impose consequences” on those responsible.

A statement from the trio said: “Our two nations today face strategic threats in an interconnected, digital world that seek to undermine our shared principles, norms, and values.

“We agree that strategic engagement in cyber-space is crucial to defending our way of life, by addressing these evolving threats with a full range of capabilities.

“We will achieve this by planning enduring combined cyber-space operations that enable a collective defence and deterrence and impose consequences on our common adversaries who conduct malicious cyber-activity.”

The three added that both nations would only take proportionate and necessary action against hostile parties within the bounds of international law.
