The NHS is currently in crisis, with unprecedented strikes and widespread issues in the quality of care, according to Siva Anandaciva, Chief Analyst at independent charity The King's Fund.
Anandaciva made the comments while discussing the latest monthly NHS performance data, which revealed that patients are waiting an average of over an hour and a half for an ambulance when they have a condition such as a stroke or heart attack, and that nearly 55,000 people are stuck in A&E on trolleys waiting more than 12 hours.
Anandaciva also highlighted that, since modern records began, A&E performance is the worst it has ever been, and that not a single NHS trust in the country is managing to meet the national target to be seen within four hours. Furthermore, there are serious issues with discharging patients, with over 13,000 people stuck in hospital despite being medically fit to leave, and the waiting list for planned hospital care remains stubbornly over 7 million. Cancer services are also under pressure, which underlines the challenge in meeting the government's latest pledge to reduce waiting lists by the end of 2023.
While the £250m emergency cash injection from the government is a welcome development, Anandaciva believes that it is too late into the winter and will take time to reach frontline services and improve care for patients. He also stressed that short-term fixes will not solve long-term challenges, and called for a timeline on the upcoming workforce plan as a way of signalling longer-term thinking from the government.
Anandaciva also stressed the importance of investment and staffing in reducing waiting times, citing the success seen in the early 2000s when services had a clear focus and the right levels of funding and personnel. Without these conditions, he believes that the sustained pressures across the system will not ease.
