Leaders in their own words: Johnson, Cannell, Wood and Schapps

Published by Rupert Douglas on November 24th 2020, 3:03pm

In our latest round-up of quotes from leaders across the UK, we hear from the Prime Minister Boris Johnson as lockdown in England comes to an end but Simon Cannell says that local lockdowns in a tiered system don’t just end at the border. We also hear from Michal Wood who wants more Individual responsibility as Grant Schapps announces changes to quarantine when entering the UK.

Boris Johnson

‘I’m sorry to say that we expect more regions will fall, at least temporarily, into higher levels than before,” he told the Commons. “But, by using these tougher tiers and by using rapid-turnaround tests on an ever greater scale to drive [the R number] below one and keep it there, it should be possible for areas to move down the tiering scale.’ (Prime minister Boris Johnson announces new tier system in England as the autumn lockdown ends)

Simon Cannell

‘’The local lockdowns have wide ranging implications way beyond the local area so please do not think that local support is good enough. We supply customers across the whole of Great Britain so we are affected by all of the local lockdowns and it becomes increasingly difficult trying to keep up with the rules across the various parts of the UK.’’ (Speciality Breads director Simon Cannell doesn’t think enough has been done to help the supply lines to the hospitality sector)

Michael Wood

‘’If we are to finish the job post Lockdown, people must be allowed to travel, give the responsibility to the people. The Hotels are doing their best working responsible and have all the relevant protocol in place, we will keep people safe given the opportunity.’’ (Michael Wood of Westfield Farms wants to see more freedom of movement to help the hospitality sector recover)

Grant Schapps

‘’ Our new testing strategy will allow us to travel more freely, see loved ones and drive international business. By giving people the choice to test on day five, we are also supporting the travel industry as it continues to rebuild out of the pandemic’’ (The transport secretary announces a change in the way people have to quarantine on arrival into the UK)
