Leaders in space: Amazon founder to join Blue Origin voyage

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to go into space in July as one of the passengers on his spaceflight company Blue Origin’s first ever crewed flight out of Earth’s atmosphere.

Confirming the news on an Instagram post, Bezos will be joined by his brother, Mark, and the winner of an online auction for a seat on the spacecraft.

As of 11:43 BST on Tuesday June 8, bidding stood at $3.5 million. The final phase of the auction will begin on June 12, which will see the remaining participants be able to bid live online.

Once the full list of passengers is finalised, the New Shepard spacecraft will fly on June 20 and carry them to the edge of space without going into full orbit, enabling passengers to experience “a few minutes of weightlessness and an unbeatable view of Earth”.

The rocket will then return to Earth and make a parachute landing in Texas, near to Blue Origin’s designated launch site.
