Government places order for 10,000 Dyson ventilators

The UK government has placed an order for 10,000 ventilators from Dyson which will eventually go to the front-line to help deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Dyson, which is working with the Cambridge based Technology Partnership, has designed a new ventilator in response to an appeal made on behalf of the NHS.

Dyson informed the BBC that the ventilator prototype is "ready to go" after undergoing human trials.

The ventilators must still clear the hurdle of medical testing procedures, but the devices are expected to do so without hindrance.

It may, however, still take around two weeks to begin mass producing the prototype.

The firm deployed hundreds of engineers to design the ventilators, and is hoping to produce them from its UK premises in Wiltshire.

The NHS currently has little over 8,000 ventilators at its disposal, while the government is looking to purchase more existing models. Official estimations show that a minimum of 30,000 ventilators will be required to help stave off the crisis.

Elsewhere, a consortium of firms including Airbus, Meggit and GKN is working on increasing the production of an existing ventilator model to help provide more front-line resources.
