Coronavirus update: More than 400,000 UK volunteers step forward

The Prime Minister announced no new measures in his daily briefing, but did say that over 400,000 volunteers had stepped forward to support the NHS in its fight against coronavirus.

This comes less than 24 hours after health secretary Matt Hancock asked people to support the country during the outbreak.

In other news, Prince Charles has tested positive for Covid-19, but palace officials have stated that his symptoms are "mild" and that his condition is stable.

Globally, more than 25 per cent of the world's population is now living under lockdown. More than a billion people in India went into lockdown at midnight, with the PM announcing a "total ban" on people leaving their homes.

In Russia, Putin has postponed a vote on a constitutional change that would allow him to stay in power.

Spain's death toll has continued to rise -- the number of deaths in the country have now overtaken China and are only behind that of Italy at 3,434 -- while there has been a slight fall in new cases in Italy.

There are now more than 450,000 global confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus ,and over 20,000 deaths.
