The most recent members of the Covid-19 artistic cohort are the indomitable Gilbert and George, the London based artistic duo. Not inspired by rainbows, à la Damien Hirst, nor a bouquet of daffodils like David Hockney, the pair have opted for a far simpler, though by no means less effective set of posters shared under Sam Harris’ new Online Art Show.
The first poster reads: “Gilbert & George say: Don’t catch it!”, while the second states: “Gilbert & George say: Don’t get it!”. Harris’ Online Art Show, his latest project claims that: “If you can’t come to art then art will come to you”, offering a range of pieces for sale online.
He states that the project “was an idea I had for artists to display art they had for sale.
“The site takes you to their Instagram account or website so you can contact them to buy the artworks.”
The website acts as an extension of his zine, Pure Filth, which includes contributions from over 80 artists, including Noel Fielding and Jake and Dinos Chapman. Hayden Kays has also produced a piece which can be printed for free on the website to encourage people to stay home.
Gilbert and George’s philanthropic efforts have grown of late, with the pair most recently producing crockery, the proceeds of which would go to the homeless. The couple voiced concern that the endeavour would be to the detriment of their reputation as self-confessed “horrid people”.
