Electrical and mechanical product supplier, Techna, has reduced its carbon footprint and energy usage by 2.1 tonnes of CO2e per year.
The Watford-based firm was the beneficiary of a Low Carbon Workspaces grant which helped make major energy improvements possible at its site.
The grant went towards the installation of energy efficient LED lighting, a heat exchanger recovery system, and new sensor lights to help make such an extensive carbon emissions offsetting possible.
The reduction in lighting usage achieved through the project was calculated by multiplying the difference in wattage between the existing lighting and the replacement LED lighting by hours of operation, on an area-by-area basis.
Techna’s reduction in heating usage was worked out by multiplying the existing heating demand by the efficiency saving of the heat exchanger.
The energy saving was then converted into a greenhouse gas emission saving via the government’s carbon conversion figure for UK grid supplied electricity as of December 2020 when the project installation began. This brought Techna to its final carbon emissions reduction figure.
The 2.1 tonnes of CO2 that Techna cut down on is equivalent to the weight of a giraffe, according to Low Carbon Workspaces who awarded the company the grant to cut down on its environmental footprint.
