Former Home Office permanent secretary Sir David Normington has urged home secretary Priti Patel to “take time” over implementing the proposed new immigration system.
Sir David is concerned that bringing the new system in by January 1 2021 will leave “a lot to do” in a “tight” ten-month timeframe.
Sir David told BBC Radio Four: “There’s a lot to do. There is legislation to put in place, if you read what was published this week there is a lot of detail to be put in place.
“The staff have to be trained and retrained, guidance will be needed for the employers and the public, there will need to be online application systems. That is a lot to do in ten months.”
The former leading civil servant stopped short on saying whether or not he felt bringing in the new immigration plans should be pushed back.
When asked, he said: “I don’t know...it’s always better to take a bit of time particularly over changes in the immigration system which are complicated and difficult.”
