Boris Johnson has moved Dominic Raab from his role as foreign secretary to deputy prime minister as part of his cabinet reshuffle.
Raab came under fire recently for his handling of the situation in Afghanistan and will now act as justice secretary in addition to being deputy PM.
Meanwhile, Robert Buckland (justice), Gavin Williamson (education) and Robert Jenrick (housing and local government) have been sacked from their respective roles.
Like Raab, Williamson has faced scrutiny for his handling of exams during lockdown.
"It has been a privilege to serve as education secretary since 2019," Williamson said following his dismissal.
"Despite the challenges of the global pandemic, I'm particularly proud of the transformational reforms I've led in Post 16 education: in further education colleges, our Skills agenda, apprenticeships and more."
Chancellor Rishi Sunak and home secretary Priti Patel will remain in their positions, while Liz Truss was promoted to the role of foreign secretary and Michael Gove was made housing minister.
Downing Street said that the reshuffle was intended to "put in place a strong and united team to build back better from the pandemic".
Conservative party co-chair Amanda Milling was also removed from her role.
"I will continue working to deliver on our plans to level up the UK," she said.
Further changes will be confirmed tomorrow.
