A by-election is underway in the Greater Manchester constituency of Stretford & Urmston, as nine candidates vie to replace Labour MP, Kate Green.
Green, first elected as the constituency MP in 2010, stood down to take on a new role as deputy mayor of the Manchester City Region.
Upon stepping down, Green said that it had been an “enormous privilege” to serve as an MP and paid tribute to her predecessor in the Manchester City Region deputy mayor role, Baroness Beverley Hughes.
Green thanked the Labour peer for being a “huge source of support” and credited her for “all (she) has achieved” in her capacity as deputy mayor.
Andrew Western, the leader of Trafford Council, is standing as Labour’s candidate in the by-election.
Polls will be open until 22:00 GMT on Thursday (December 15), with the results expected on Friday morning.
The other eight candidates participating in the Stretford & Urmston by-election are as follows:
- Emily Carter-Kandola (Conservative Party)
- Anna Fryer (Liberal Democrats)
- Hazel Gibb (Independent)
- Christina Glancy (Freedom Alliance)
- Dan Jerrome (Green Party)
- Jim Newell (Rejoin EU)
- Paul Swansborough (Reform UK)
- Julien Yvon (Social Democratic Party)
