PM and Carrie Johnson welcome baby girl in bewildering week

Prime minister Boris Johnson and wife, Carrie, have announced the birth of their second child together.

Carrie Johnson, née Symonds, gave birth to a healthy daughter at an NHS hospital in London on Thursday.

The PM was alongside his wife throughout the labour, and a spokesperson later confirmed that mother and daughter are “doing very well”.

The Johnsons’ first child, a son named Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas, was born in April last year, mere weeks after the PM was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for a bout of Covid.

The birth of their daughter comes amid a difficult week for the prime minister, with outcry over his decision to move England into Plan B Covid restrictions and backlash over news of a Christmas Party being held in Downing Street on December 18, 2020, while the rest of the country was subject to Tier 3 restrictions.

The media fallout from the controversy has already seen one government adviser, Allegra Stratton, resign from her post. Stratton was recorded joking about the December 18 Christmas Party during a mock press conference last year, with the footage leaked earlier this week.

An official investigation is also being launched into other alleged parties which are said to have occurred on November 27 and December 10, for possible breaches of Covid restrictions in force at the time. Amid the controversy, Downing Street has cancelled its official staff Christmas party this year.

The BBC also reports that, according to government insiders, there was a party held by Carrie Johnson in the flat where she resides with the PM above Downing Street on November 18, 2020, the same day that former senior aide Dominic Cummings resigned. The alleged attendees and a spokesperson for the Johnsons denied the speculation.

Too add further fuel to the fire currently surrounding the prime minister, the Tories were fined £17,800 this week by the Electoral Commission for “failing to accurately report a donation” that helped cover the cost of refurbishments to the Downing Street flat where he resides alongside his wife.
