Netflix and thrill: Streamers lead the way in Emmy nominations

It’s a good time to be Baby Yoda. The 72nd Emmy nominations list, released yesterday, both succeeded in surprising and snubbing the great and the good of the televisual world, with “The Child” leading the way.

Tuesday’s nomination list proved that Netflix is still Queen of the streamers, scoring a grand 160 nominations, eclipsing its rival of HBO who left with a more meagre 107. This is, in part, a result of the end of Game of Thrones which has dominated the Emmys for almost a decade.

Yet for some, the Emmys nomination list will leave a bad taste in their mouth. Reese Witherspoon has been snubbed, receiving nary a nomination for her work in Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere or The Morning Show. The Guardian goes so far as to suggest her exclusion “almost feels deliberate.”

Some nominations are far more conventional. The Kominsky Method and the Marvelous Mrs Maisel both received their fair share of nominations, likewise, Killing Eve, a more questionable choice given its poor reviews this season.

With over 500 different television shows broadcast last year, it seems that both quantity and quality has increased dramatically. So too has the number of Emmy submissions, increasing by 15 per cent this year. Votes on the very best shows will be cast in the ten days following 21 August.

At present the ceremony is to take place on 20 September in a ceremony on ABC hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, though the precise format is as yet unclear.
