Neil Golding takes the reins as Saracens Rugby Club chairman

Lawyer Neil Golding has been appointed new Saracens chairman in place of the retiring Nigel Wray.

The Rugby Union club said in a statement that Golding’s “immediate priority” will be to “lead and oversee new governance measures including steps to ensure regulatory compliance” after Saracens had been embroiled in a recent salary cap scandal.

Following an inquiry into dealings between former chairman Wray and some of the club’s players, Saracens were fined £5.36 million and docked 35 points, leaving them bottom of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby league table with -7 points.

Wray’s tenure as chairman saw the club win five Premiership trophies and three European titles.

Following his appointment, Golding said: "I recognise I am joining at a time of significant change.

"We, as a board, are strongly committed to introducing new robust processes and working together with other Premiership Rugby Limited stakeholders in the best interests of Saracens and English rugby."

The club’s interim chief executive Edward Griffiths revealed on Monday that the club may have to overhaul the current playing squad in order to ensure full compliance with salary cap rules in future.
