Egypt has held a military funeral and declared three days of national mourning for its former president Hosni Mubarak, who passed away this week aged 91.
Mubarak died at a hospital in Cairo following surgery, according to Egypt's state media outlet.
A statement hailed Mubarak as "one of the heroes of the glorious October war", referring to his military service during the Arab-Israeli war in 1973. It made no reference to his stint as the nation's leader.
Mubarak held power in the North African state for 30 years before being ousted during the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011.
Over the following six years while standing trial for numerous offences, Mubarak was held in prisons and military hospitals and was handed life in prison after being deemed complicit in the murder of Arab Spring protestors. The conviction was eventually quashed following an appeal.
Incumbent president Abdul Fattah al-Sisi was a close ally of Mubarak, having served as the ex-president's head of military intelligence. He also led the 2013 revolt which overthrew Mubarak's successor, the democratically elected Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi.
Sisi then resigned from the military before contesting Egypt's next elections. He won via a landslide victory and assumed office in June 2014, before being re-elected in 2018.
Sisi walked behind Mubarak's coffin alongside the former president's sons, as the procession made its way to the Field Marshal Tantawi mosque in Cairo.
