MENTA chief executive on leadership: “It’s about knowing when to listen”

As businesses across the country respond to the current economic situation, The Leaders Council spoke with the chief executive of MENTA, about the importance of listening. Meanwhile the government is to announce whether France will feature on the quarantine list in the next 24 hours.

Leadership in focus

For the past decade, Alex Till has overseen the work of MENTA, The Suffolk Enterprise Agency. The agency provides business advice and support to firms across Norfolk and Suffolk, from training and funding right through to business space and networking events. Till is also the chief executive of Genix Ltd, an arm of MENTA’s business support service.

Till spoke with The Leaders Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland about the importance of conversation. He noted: “The big piece for me is – know who to talk to and when to talk to them – there’s no bad conversations.”

As an active member of the Institute of Enterprise & Entrepreneurship and SFEDI National Advisory Council, advising central government and policymakers about strategic trends within enterprise and entrepreneurship, he is well versed in the importance of teamwork. “We are all trying to make sure that business continues and that we can have some form of opportunity even though this is a crazy position for us to be in”, he said.

As Till also chairs the National Enterprise Network, an organisation seeking to represent, unite and support all organisations who are passionate about inspiring and encouraging enterprise, he is an expert in supervising his team. He concluded: “at this moment in time, especially with the staff I’ve got, it’s about knowing when to listen.”

With Till’s work and his expertise, it is clear he provides welcome guidance for businesses across the country.

Leadership today

France has reported its highest number of new Covid-19 cases since June, raising concerns that the country could be placed on the Foreign Office’s quarantine list.

Over the past fortnight the country has seen 22.4 new cases per 100,000 residents, up from around 13 a week earlier. A government decision is anticipated in the next 24 hours.

Elsewhere, the Bank of England has noted that while recovery is underway, risks remain.

Governor Andrew Bailey and his colleagues have voted to hold interest rates at 0.1 per cent, however, they have decided to hold fire on the £745 billion money-printing programme.

The Bank noted that around one third of workers had suffered a loss of income of at least five per cent as a result of unemployment and furlough, with the impact spread evenly across those with both high and low pay. However, those with a lower income are more likely to have run down their savings as a result of this.

While the credit loss is estimated to be “somewhat less” than the £80 billion anticipated in May, the Bank notes that they would be able to absorb the losses as required.

Leadership in history

Almost 30 years ago today, Sir Tim Berners-Lee released files detailing his idea for the World Wide Web. WWW debuted as a publicly available service on the internet. Deemed one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, Berners-Lee demonstrates that leadership and excellence go hand in hand.

Without Beners-Lee contribution it would not be possible to read this article.
