Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on forward Sergio Aguero, after his hat-trick in a 6-1 win at Aston Villa saw him become the top overseas goalscorer in Premier League history.
The treble saw the 31-year-old Argentinian move ahead of Arsenal great Thierry Henry and level with former England international Frank Lampard on 177 Premier League goals. At the time of writing, only the English trio of Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andy Cole have scored more goals in the English top flight.
His hat-trick at Villa Park was also his 12th in the Premier League: another record.
It has taken little under nine years for the forward to surpass Henry as the Premier League's highest overseas goalscorer, having first joined Manchester City in July 2011 from Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £40 million.
Discussing Aguero’s feat, his boss Guardiola said: “He’s a legend. It was an honour to be here on the day he achieved the record.
“To break this record of an incredible legend like Thierry Henry means it’s not just for a short period, it’s many years.
"To be the foreign player with the most goals and hat-tricks speaks for itself. Hopefully he can score more.”
Guardiola went on to label Aguero as the second greatest forward in the world, inferior only to fellow Argentine Lionel Messi, who Guardiola used to coach at Barcelona.
Guardiola said: “The best is Messi. Messi is number nine, ten, eleven, six, four. But the rest is Sergio.
“This kind of player…there are not many in the incredible history of English football. He helps to make the Premier League better.”
Aguero’s contract at Manchester City is due to lapse next year. Despite being hopeful that the Argentine will sign a new deal to stay at Etihad Stadium, Guardiola said it is ultimately down to the man himself as to whether he opts to remain with the club.
Guardiola said: “It depends on him, it is his decision”.
