LEADERS IN THEIR OWN WORDS: Trump, Biden, Oldham, Khan and Plenderleith

In our latest series of leadership quotations, we hear from Donald Trump and Joe Biden on Covid-19. We also hear from Chris Oldham on recruitment difficulties and Chris Plenderleith on how to create economic growth.

Donald Trump

‘I learnt so much about coronavirus. And one thing’s for certain. Don’t let it dominate you. Don’t be afraid of it. We have the best medical equipment. The best medicines. All developed recently. Don’t let it dominate you. Don’t let it take over your life.’ (The US President after his release from hospital).

Chris Oldham

‘One of the biggest challenges we face is sourcing skilled and qualified engineers. The south coast used to be home to multiple large engineering businesses, but they have almost all disappeared in our location. In the last couple of years, it has become increasingly difficult to source the employees we need.’ (The Oldham Seals managing director on the ongoing recruitment issues in the engineering sector).

Dr. Sadiya Khan

‘It's an unconscionable message. I would go so far as to say that it may precipitate or worsen spread.’ (The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine cardiologist in response to Trump’s comments).

Chris Plenderleith

‘Economic growth can only be delivered by generating confidence – be that confidence in government or management. We must also, however, challenge bureaucracy and promote initiative and imagination, supported by inclusive policies which promote equality.’ (The Executive Chairman of The Leith Planning Group on stimulating the economy).

Joe Biden

‘I would hope that the President, having gone through what he went through, would communicate the right lessons to the American people. Masks matter.

‘The only thing I heard from him was a tweet saying something like 'don't be so concerned about all this' essentially. There's a lot to be concerned about. I’ve been fastidious about social distancing and wearing a mask when I'm not socially distanced.’ (The presidential hopeful in response to Donald Trump’s remarks).
