The Evelina Hospital School has received the Bronze Award for 'Impact through Partnership' at The 2021 Pearson National Teaching Awards.
Widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession, The Pearson National Teaching Awards were first launched in 1998 and are held annually to celebrate of excellence within the education sector.
The awards recognise the hard work and dedication of teachers across the country, extending over 15 awards categories that cover the primary, secondary and further education sectors.
Nominations are open to schools and colleges across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Situated in an atrium on the third floor of the Evelina London Children’s Hospital in Southwark, The Evelina Hospital School provides an education for children who are unable to attend conventional school due to their health needs.
Some pupils who cannot attend lessons in the school classrooms are taught on the wards at their bedsides, with support from the hospital team. School teaching staff also provide the wards with books, educational teaching packs, cutting edge computing resources, cooking materials, musical instruments, science experiments and art materials to help keep pupils learning.
The Evelina Hospital School’s headteacher, Anne Hamilton [pictured], spoke of the collective “delight” and “honour” among her staff team as they were confirmed Bronze Award winners for the 2021 Impact through Partnership Award.
She said: “We are so honoured and delighted to have been awarded a National Teaching Award. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, flexible learning is more important than ever and at Evelina, it has always been at the heart of what we do.”
The Evelina Hospital School benefits from a range of established partnerships, including with technology partner Microsoft Education, which has proven vital for sustaining children's learning during the health crisis.
The school also enjoys longstanding relationships with City of London Sinfonia, who help provide world-class music to hospital classrooms and at children’s bedsides, and the Rambert and Royal Academy of Dance who come into the school to conduct dance sessions.
Through the 'Read for Good' initiative, the school regularly donates books, and it also promotes healthy lifestyles through PE sessions hosted in school and on the wards by another partner, Capital Kids Cricket.
Meanwhile, the school’s relationship with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts helps bring food technology into the pupils’ education, and its partnership with the University of Cambridge’s Nrich Maths programme has helped enhance the mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills of the children.
