Government’s green plans for buildings to include ramping up heat pump manufacturing

Within the government’s ten-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution to accelerate our path to net zero, prime minister Boris Johnson is clear about Westminster’s ambition to put homes, workplaces, schools and hospitals at the centre of the economic recovery from coronavirus.

Under the plans, the government declares that it will move away from the use of fossil fuel burners to make Britain’s buildings more energy efficient, offering lower carbon alternatives. The government has also outlined ambitions to develop the UK’s expanding heat pump manufacturing base and expand supply chains for building efficiency.

The prime minister said: “This Ten Point Plan will mobilise £12 billion of government investment, and potentially 3 times as much from the private sector, to create and support up to 250,000 green jobs.

“We will turn the UK into the world’s number one centre for green technology and finance, laying the foundations for decades of economic growth by delivering net zero emissions in a way that creates jobs and allows us to carry on living our lives.”

With ministers looking to expand operations for manufacturing energy efficient heat pumps in the UK, firms such as Wolverhampton-based Northern Gas Heating - who specialise in installing such products - are in line to benefit.

An installer of central heating systems to the private market, Northern Gas Heating is a business that promises to deliver low-cost heating and hot water all year round, with the Air Source Heat Pump one of its major products.

Heat pumps are devices which transfer thermal energy from cool spaces to warm spaces using the refrigeration cycle and are used to warm and sometimes cool buildings.

Although heat pumps do command fuel bills from the consumer because it is powered by electricity, the potential annual energy savings for an average-sized, four-bedroom detached home using a heat pump is £425 per year, based on fuel prices from April 2020 and the costs of a G-rated gas boiler as provided by the energysavingstrust.

Northern Gas Heating managing director, Nadeem Ahmad, commented: “The installation of a heat pump equals lower fuel bills overall, minimal maintenance and low carbon emissions.”

“We strive here at Northern Gas Heating to ensure that our service goes above industry standard and that the heating systems we install match the routine and demands of consumers.”
