Equatorial Guinea president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has confirmed that his government will donate a sum of roughly £1.5 million to aid China in its fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
The decision for the oil-rich African state to provide financial aid was made as an act of “support and solidarity” to what Obiang called Equatorial Guinea’s “sister nation”.
Equatorial Guinea’s own GDP of $13.4 billion is far inferior to that of China, which boasts the world's second largest economy with a GDP of $13.6 trillion.
Equatorial Guinea is the third largest oil producer in Africa, but over half the population are thought to be living in poverty.
As of Friday morning this week, the coronavirus outbreak had killed 636 people.
