Coronavirus update: UK set to extend lockdown

Published by Ross Hindle on April 16th 2020, 9:09am

The government is expected to announce a three-week extension to the UK lockdown period at the press conference later today.

Government scientific adviser Professor Neil Ferguson has said that the country "will have to maintain some level of social distancing... until we have a vaccine available".

The IMF MD, Kristalina Georgieva, has called for an extension to Brexit trade talks amid times of "unprecedented uncertainty" while her organisation deals with a "global recession... not seen in our lifetimes".

And in slightly more positive news, a select number of KFC, Burger King and Pret A Manger restaurants have reopened for takeaway only.

In France, more than 650 people have been infected on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that her government will ease the lockdown slowly following "fragile intermediate success".

Finally, in the US, President Donald Trump has announced that the country has "passed the peak" of new infections, stating that the country's citizens will "be the comeback kids". He predicted that some states would reopen by the end of the month.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
