Coronavirus update: UK lockdown extended for at least three more weeks

Dominic Raab has said that the government will keep lockdown measures in place for at least three more weeks.

He says that though there have been signs that social distancing is helping to stem the tide of the virus, the evidence is "mixed and inconsistent" and that "infection rates [aren't] down as much as [they need to be".

President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has offered a "heartfelt apology" to Italy, saying that "too many were not there" when the country needed them.

In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared a nationwide state of emergency following criticism that he has not been doing enough to protect the country from Covid-19.

And finally, US Department of Labor statistics show that more than 20 million people have filed for unemployment benefits in the country over the last four weeks.

There are now more than 2.1 million global confirmed cases -- although experts anticipate the true number is much higher -- with over 140,000 deaths worldwide.

The next Leaders Council update will follow tomorrow morning.
