Coronavirus update: UK faces first day in full lockdown

Published by Ross Hindle on March 24th 2020, 10:10am

Last night, the Prime Minister announced a series of strict new measures to suppress the spread of coronavirus, telling people that they should only leave home for a very limited number of reasons.

He said the country was facing a "national emergency" and that these measures were necessary to save lives.

This came after the government passed a 329-page emergency bill granting them new powers -- which health secretary Matt Hancock referred to as "extraordinary measures" -- which have never been seen before in British history. The bill is set to go before the House of Lords today.

This will be supported by a government message across all UK mobile networks which will detail the new shutdown measures. The GOV.UK alert is being sent across the course of the day.

Elsewhere in the world, Donald Trump has insisted that America will soon be "open for business" in spite of a widespread lockdown taking hold state-by-state.

China has announced just 78 new cases today, of which all but four have come in from abroad. And Wuhan, where the virus originated, is supposedly set to partially lift its two-month lockdown in April.

Latest figures show the number of confirmed cases approaching 400,000, with over 6,500 in the UK.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
