Coronavirus update: Some measures to remain until end of year

Chief medical officer Chris Whitty has said that some kind of social distancing measures will have to remain until the end of the year.

He has consistently told reporters that the only long-term "way out" for this global pandemic is to find a vaccine -- which is not likely to happen in 2020.

In education, headteachers' leader Geoff Barton has said that the soonest "realistic" point at which schools could reopen would be June 1, but "planning would need to begin very soon" to meet that target.

There are now more than 2.5 million confirmed global cases, although experts anticipate the number to be much higher.

In Germany, face masks have now become compulsory in public across the entire country.

And WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus has said that coronavirus "will be with us for a long time", warning that easing lockdown measures could "reignite" the outbreak.

Looking back to the origin of the virus, the Australian government has asked G20 countries to "take action" on the issue of wet markets. It is currently the belief of health officials that the virus originated in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, Hubei. Wet markets have come under criticism in the past for the trade in illegal and "exotic" live animals.

And finally, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order in the US suspending all visa applications for at least 60 days.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
