Coronavirus update: No new deaths in China, PM in intensive care

Published by Leaders Council on April 7th 2020, 8:08am

It was announced last night that Boris Johnson was taken to an intensive care unit after his symptoms "worsened" over the course of Monday, to the extent that he was given oxygen late in the afternoon.

He has been moved so he can be near to a ventilator -- just a precaution, according to a Downing Street statement. Michael Gove confirmed this morning that Mr Johnson was not on a ventilator at present, and that No. 10 would "ensure the country is updated".

In other news, petrol prices have fallen dramatically over the past few weeks, and today they are nearing £1 a litre for the first time since March 2016.

In Europe, France has recorded its highest daily death toll yet -- 833 in the past 24 hours -- and another Greek migrant camp has entered quarantine after a resident tested positive for Covid-19.

For the first time since daily figures started to be published in January, China has recorded no new deaths, and only 32 new confirmed cases -- all of which were "imported" cases from overseas.

And in Africa, the Ivorian defence minister has tested positive for the virus, while strict rules in Morocco mean that citizens in public without masks risk jail time.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
