The PM has announced the government will be "massively [ramping] up" testing in the coming days.

As of yesterday, the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the UK was 2,352, with more than 25,000 confirmed cases.

It has also been revealed that in the past two weeks, there have been almost a million applications for Universal Credit.

In other news, the latest airline to make headlines is British Airways, which is expected to furlough some 36,000 staff after a week of negotiation with Unite, the union.

And in the daily coronavirus briefing held yesterday, business secretary Alok Sharma told banks that it would be "completely unacceptable" for them to refuse loans to "good businesses in financial difficulty".

In slightly more positive news, scientists in Australia have started testing potential vaccines for the virus, and trials on ferrets will continue for the next three months.

And finally, the death toll in the US has broken 5,000 after 884 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The next Leaders Council update will follow this evening.
