There have now been 2,352 deaths in the UK from the novel coronavirus, with a rise of 563 in the last 24 hours alone.
Tennis tournament Wimbledon has also been cancelled, for this first time since the Second World War.
Uefa also announced that it would be suspending all Champions League and Europa League matches "until further notice".
Today's press conference was also given by business secretary Alok Sharma, who thanked the country for the "huge effort" that had been made in "tackling the pandemic" after saying that the UK had taken "the right steps at the right time".
Mr Sharma also thanked businesses for supporting workers, communities and the health service, saying they were "making a difference".
Elsewhere in Europe, deaths in Spain have passed 9,000, but the country's infection rate is slowing.
Iran made headlines today, too, after its health ministry reported that the death toll there has passed 3,000.
