Ahead of International Women’s Day on Sunday, The Conservative Party has paid tribute to former prime minister, and current MP for Maidenhead, Theresa May.
Alongside the hashtag #InternationalWomensDay, the @Conservatives twitter account named Mrs May as their MP of the day.
Mrs May, only the second woman ever to become prime minister or to lead one of the two main parties, was re-elected as the MP for Maidenhead in December.
And although she was fiercely criticised throughout her tenure as prime minister, Mrs May can take solace from the fact that the vision she set out for her country and party in 2016 is now taking shape.
She wanted the Conservative party to be able to appeal beyond their historic voter base and become electable in the midlands and the North. She wanted the party to adopt more paternalistic policies, and move away from its more Thatcherite tendencies. She wanted a tough line on immiagration. She wanted to defeat Jeremy Corbyn and his brand of socialism. And she wanted to get Brexit done.
In many ways, therefore, it could be argued we are now living in Theresa May’s Britain.
Indeed, if one were to look at the state of play in the commons and the country and compare that with the visions set out at various points in their careers by both Theresa May and Boris Johnson, one might well conclude that the direction the country is taking owes more to her than to him.
If nothing else, this throws the famous refrain of the American art collective The Residents in to doubt. Regardless of who is currently resident in number 10 Downing Street, it might well be the case that this is not a man’s world after all.
