Budget date will remain unchanged, new chancellor says

Newly appointed chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that the Budget will go ahead on March 11 as planned.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps had suggested that the Budget may be postponed following Sajid Javid’s surprise resignation as chancellor last week.

Shapps told the BBC that Budget plans were at a “well advanced” stage but indicated that Sunak “may want time” to go over them himself in preparation.

However, Sunak tweeted that he was “cracking on with preparations” for the Budget to take place as planned on March 11 and that the government would “deliver on the promises” made during the general election, “levelling up and unleashing the country’s potential”.

Sunak succeeded Javid as chancellor having served as chief secretary to the Treasury beforehand.

Javid’s resignation came in the midst of Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle after he refused to dispense with his team of advisers as a condition for staying in post.
