Spirotech Group has consolidated its work in helping local communities through Covid-19 restrictions by donating five laptops to Sawtry Junior Academy in Cambridgeshire.
Closures of British schools to all but pupils of NHS staff, other key workers and vulnerable children has seen an entire generation of young learners forced to take-up home learning, yet the affects of digital poverty have left many effectively locked out of their education thanks to not having sufficient Wi-Fi access or the laptops and smart devices necessary to access vital resources.
With schools not reopening until March 8, the donation of the laptops at the beginning of February allowed for disadvantaged children within the community to access much needed remote learning resources.
Spirotech Group handed the devices to Sawtry Junior Academy principal, Sarah Flack, who was taken aback by the generosity of the gesture.
Flack said: “Spirotech have very kindly donated five brand new laptops to the school. These have already been given to families who do not have devices to be able to access the remote and live learning from home. These are in addition to the school devices provided to years five and six, the devices provided by the Department for Education and the devices donated by the Parish council, which will soon be delivered from Dell.
“This is enabling us to ensure that the Key Stage Two children in Sawtry are being provided with a really great opportunity to continue their education during lockdown. We are very grateful to Spirotech and the Parish council for their support in helping us to provide high quality learning opportunities during such a difficult time as these laptops go to support pupils who are our most disadvantaged or vulnerable and as such, in need of the most support.”
The opening quarter of this year also brought with it a significant milestone for Spirotech director Katie Wood, who celebrates 21 years with the company in March.
Having joined the group as an accounts assistant in 2000, Katie has climbed the corporate ladder to occupy her current director role. Her tenure has culminated in Spirotech now employing more than 80 staff across all its divisions, with plans underway for the business to build a state-of-the-art smart factory on the outskirts of Sawtry, where its head office is based.
Wood's fellow director, David Gadsby, said: “We are so fortunate to have Katie at the helm. Her knowledge of Spirotech’s business is phenomenal and we wholeheartedly congratulate and wish Katie all the best as we move forward to another era of Spirotech.”
