All standalone Carphone Warehouse stores to close

Carphone Warehouse has announced it will close each of its 531 standalone shops on April 3, triggering 2,900 job losses.

The standalone stores make up eight per cent of Dixons Carphone’s retail space in the UK, with the firm saying that the closures are an “essential next step” in making the mobile arm of the business profitable, after it was projected to lose £90 million in 2020.

It reassured that around 40 per cent of the staff affected by the closures are expected to remain with the business in new roles.

Dixons Carphone said that the decision is in no way linked to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the resulting economic impact.

Carphone Warehouse’s 305 units within PC World and Curry’s outlets will be left untouched and mobile products will still be available online.

Dixons Carphone chief executive Alex Baldock said that changing consumer habits have been a huge factor in the decision, with customers increasingly purchasing online and only venturing out to larger stores which have a wider range of products.

Baldock said: “They can’t find all these [extra products] in the small mobile-only stores that are one-twentieth of the size; they’re visiting these less and these stores are losing more money as a result.

"I don't underestimate how upsetting this news will be for our colleagues, and we'll treat everyone with honesty, respect and care.

"But though this is by far the toughest decision we've had to make, it is necessary. We must follow our customers. They want help with all technology, all in one place, and this trend is only going to accelerate in a more connected 5G world.”
